The role of the working class and organized labour in the ongoing uprisings or revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt has been discussed very little so far, not only in the mainstream media. I recommend two new contributions to an analysis stressing the importance of the labour movement, may it be organized in trade unions or independent and spontaneous.
- Trade unions: the revolutionary social network at play in Egypt and Tunisia
The media have focused on Facebook and Twitter, but the pro-democracy movements have flourished thanks to unions
An interesting comment on the Guardian website.
- Striking Egyptian Workers Fuel the Uprising After 10 Years of Labor Organizing
By Democracy Now! There is a special section on the DN! website on what's happening in Egypt.
If you have more interesting contributions on the subject, feel free to post them and/or the links in the comments!
